Nearly 6 months in …

and I’m starting to realize a little more joy of retirement!

I wanted to retire at 50 but made it instead at 56. I am thankful for that opportunity. My desire is to still be useful in my community and ‘Lord, say the same’ I will be.

These first months of retirement have been filled with activities for Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. and Bakersfield Ivy Legacy Foundation starting with finishing up the 26th presentation of our Miss Fashionetta Program. Such a longstanding program has many traditions, even so, it was exciting to see new elements added. The challenge of working at the edge of my comfort zone was met again by serving on the leadership team for this program and I was able to learn more of what I can do and see a little more of what is possible. #blessings

Off the heals of Miss Fashionetta, we put on the 47th Annual African American Graduation Awards program. The chair of this team, my sister & friend, lost her husband in the midst of this committee work. Even so, she pressed through and completed leading the program to its event night. Prayers and the cooperation that is signature of a sisterhood made this possible. I will continue to pray for her and her family as well as the scholarship recipients and their families. #thereIsHope

The last major activity of these first months of retirement was the celebration of the chapter’s 50th Chartering Anniversary. It was a two-day event including a fundraising concert and gala. The concert featured one of my favorite artists - Eric Roberson. Being able to bring him to my city to get others to experience his show was a long time goal and just as expected, those who attended really enjoyed themselves. Can’t thank Eric enough for his kindness in bringing his show to help us celebrate 50 years of service. The gala was also inspirational with equal parts highlighting our charter members, the work of the chapter, and showcasing some of our key partners in service. Thankful to have seen lots of smiles and light hearts.

I did get some other nice things in with the best on happening just this weekend - our annual boat trip in Newport Beach!
