A Day to Celebrate

I share my Bday with Tony Bennet, Ryan Lochte, Michael Ealy and even Martha Stewart. But none of those have been impactful on my community as Don Hicks! His parents and my paternal grandparents migrated from the south to California around the same time - we go way back. His dad and my grandfather served as deacons at the church I grew up in. I learned things in the youth Bible Study Don taught that I still think on today. He and Don Factory were key in all that I learned about singing in a choir & music. Even more so, getting to work with him in many things at church (which was more like family) made him like an uncle/father/friend. I know many people who can say the same. We miss him.

This year, on Don’s Bday which is also my Bday, his nephew and his children had a tribute to Don at a downtown live music venue. It was a great opportunity for the community to come together, remember him and celebrate. Someone called it #Donchella and that’s what I’m calling it from here on out 😅. The music was good and I know he would have been pleased.
